Chapter 10 - Rana

Rana rummaged through the kitchen drawer, looking for a knife that looked suitable to prep the fish with. She glanced over her shoulder towards the lakeshore, wondering how Nix’s search for firewood was going. That wasn’t the only thing she was wondering about; she desperately wanted to know what his plan for the future was. As much as she thought staying here might be the better of her few options for the time being, it didn’t quell the worries looming over her. Even more infuriating was the way Nix seemed to not be giving the future a second thought. Both times she’d brought it up he’d seemed to just brush her questions off. That lack of forethought seemed to be becoming something of a pattern of his. He’d run off without supplies or a place to go, come here on a whim, and seemed to continually flip back and forth between treating her like a prisoner and treating her almost like a friend. It was confusing, and she found herself feeling more and more on edge.

If he’d committed to one way of treating her, at least she’d know what to expect, Rana thought. Instead, he’d lock her in a spare bedroom, then joke around with her while agreeing to her plan to clean. He’d looked somewhere between panicked and angry when he’d stormed into the kitchen that morning, no doubt thinking she’d attempted to escape when she’d merely gone downstairs on her own, and now they were preparing for a bonfire together. All in all, Rana felt wasn’t really sure where the line was drawn, or what it was even drawn between. She’d decided she’d simply keep acting as friendly as possible. At the very least, if she did figure out an escape plan, his guard might be down. And at best, maybe they’d even become friends.

She wondered if she was foolish for thinking that. Another, more treacherous, part of her mind asked if friendship was really all she wanted from him. Rana shook her head and cast those thoughts away. She wasn’t even really admitting she might want to be friends with him; anything further was solidly out of the question.

And maybe you should really think about why you think the guy who kidnapped you would make a good friend anyways, she chided herself. Then again, it’s not like he did it because he’s evil, or something. I mean, I understand why he felt like he didn’t have a better choice. I don’t know what I would have done in his shoes.

She finally found a knife that looked somewhat suitable, and placed it in the basket alongside the other plates, fruit, and various other items. She recalled that their plan was to have Nix use his dragon form to start the fire, and felt both apprehensive and excited at the prospect. She had countless more questions for him about the shifting thing, but had so far tried to avoid asking them when she’d realized he didn’t seem keen on talking about it.
